Passing Your Driving Test
Although the practical driving test only takes about 40 minutes, it is time that can take months to prepare for.
An expert driving instructor will fully support you in passing your driving test. But it’s always a great idea to understand exactly what you will need to do before and during the test to stand the best chance of passing.
On top of that, there have recently been driving test changes implemented in United Kingdom, and it’s important any learner driver is aware of those.
Prepare For Your Test
To stand the best chance of passing your driving test first time, there are several things you can do to help:
- Make sure you are thoroughly prepared
Ensure you have taken enough lessons and have thoroughly covered everything you need to several times. Be aware of your weak points and work on those during your final lessons.
- Know the Highway code
The last thing you need is to be caught out on a question, or to be confused by road markings you are not familiar with on your test. The more thoroughly that you understand the Highway code, the easier and less stressful the test will be.
- Drive near the test centre
Your final driving lessons in Birmingham, and any other driving time you have close your test, should be undertaken close to the driving centre. This will help you to get familiar with the roads around the centre, explore possible routes and help you to understand how busy traffic in the area is. Being familiar with the area will mean you are calmer on the day.
- Get some sleep
Although this may sound obvious, driving under stressful circumstances is not easy and is even more difficult if you are tired. Get a good nights sleep before you take your test.
- Deal with your nerves
Failing your test is not the end of the world. The chances of you crashing or causing a huge issue on your test are also minimal. So it’s important to keep perspective and help yourself to stay calm. The calmer you are, the better your decision-making will be.
- Take everything you need
Unbelievably, 4500 UK practical driving tests do not start each year because the learner driver either turns up with an unsuitable vehicle, or has not brought all of the correct paperwork. Obviously employing an expert driving instructor and legal vehicle, such as those provided by us here at Andy1st driving school, will remove this worry.
Understand What Is In The Practical Driving Test
The practical driving test is around 40 minutes and is designed to cover all the main daily driving skills you will need.
The main things covered, and the main things people fail on, are in the following areas:
- Observation (checking mirrors for example)
- Awareness (hesitation, not driving appropriately for conditions)
- Signalling (failing to indicate correctly or at all)
- Vehicle control (generally, steering accuracy)
Recent Driving Test Changes
The most important change to the driving test is that the independent driving phase of the test has been roughly doubled.
In the past, only 10 minutes of the test was independent driving, where you would drive without turn-by-turn instructions from the examiner.
The new guidelines are for the independent driving part of the test to last for at least 20 minutes.
The other December 2017 changes to the practical driving test are:
- You may be asked to follow instructions from a sat nav
- Tested reversing manoeuvres have changed
- Vehicle safety questions will be asked while driving, not while stationary
